Chemex Coffee Maker
The Chemex coffee maker has been around for nearly 70 years. Its design is extremely simple. It is made of sturdy glass in an hour glass shape. The top of the carafe is where the coffee filter is positioned and the bottom is the reservoir where the brewed coffee resides. To make a cup of coffee with the Chemex, simply place one of its heavy-duty filters in the top section of the carafe, fill with ground coffee, and pour boiling water over the grinds.
An advantage of the Chemex over standard drip coffee makers is that the water is the always the correct temperature making for the perfect infusion of water and coffee every time. And the process of manually pouring the water over the grinds yourself lets you control the infusion time based on how fine your coffee grinds are.
Owners of the Chemex say the coffee brewed is more flavorful, pure, and less bitter than standard drip coffee makers. Although the design makes it a bit difficult to clean, this isn’t an issue if the pot is rinsed soon after brewing and sediment is not allowed to collect in the lower chamber. In fact, the cleaning process is a feature that makes the coffee so pure. There are not the multiple parts and pieces to clean as there are on electric coffee makers.
Although the Chemex system does require you to stick around and manage the brewing process, die-hards say it is worth it. And if good coffee isn't enough to convince you, the Chemex Coffee Maker is part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
